Listen to Your Feet and Know the Symptoms
Achilles tendinitis is considered to be an overuse injury, which means that it develops over time due to repeated stress and pressure on the tendon. This tendon attaches the calf muscles at the back of your leg to your heel bone. Walking, running, and jumping all heavily rely upon this important tendon. The term tendinitis describes a degeneration and inflammation within the tendon. Our patients usually complain of discomfort behind the heel along with swelling and decreased mobility. It is common for the pain to worsen when you are active, and it can flare up when you step out of bed in the morning. You may feel localized pain along the tendon during or after running, sluggishness in your leg, and stiffness that may or may not go away as the tendon warms up. A popping sensation should never be ignored and requires immediate treatment as this may indicate that the tendon has ruptured.
What Can Cause This to Happen?
This condition is most often caused by overuse, when there is a surge in the intensity or frequency of a particular activity. A lack of proper stretching can cause the Achilles tendon to remain tight during exercise and the strain can begin the development of tendonitis. Repetitive impact to the foot such as running on hard surfaces or wearing shoes that fail to properly support the feet and ankles can lead to this injury. Trauma to the Achilles from a sudden blow or severe misstep can cause it to happen, and in older patients, a previously existing arthritic condition can also be a factor.
