Earth Day is April 22 and if you plan on getting down and dirty planting
trees or picking up trash – good for you! Just make sure you clean
yourself up afterward, and that includes your feet! Keeping feet clean
and dry is key to avoiding all sorts of germs and infections, including
the virus that causes
The human papillomavirus, or HPV, is responsible for the development of
warts. Just a small opening in the skin can invite it in, and once it
enters, that familiar stubborn bump will rear its ugly head! So, besides
cleanliness, it’s important to be aware of scratches and cuts and
protect them with bandages.
Warts are super contagious, too, and can spread not only person-to-person,
but surface-to-surface. That means in your attempts to stay wart-free,
steer clear of anyone with a wart, and anything they use or touch. This
includes bathmats, towels, shared exercise equipment, and bathroom toiletries.
Sharing pedicure tools and footwear are both no-no’s as well.
If you already have a wart, and your goal is to be wart-free, it’s
important not to pick at the growth or you might spread the virus elsewhere
on your body. A single wart can then turn into multiple ones just like
that. If one wart is tough to get rid of, just think of how hard it is
to treat a bunch of them!
Finally, never walk around barefoot in public places. Others who may be
carrying the virus could have walked barefoot before you, putting you
at risk. Protect your feet by always wearing shower sandals or flip flops
in locker rooms, gym showers, pool sides, and saunas.
